Lead – Certified Professional Coder

Responsible for ensuring that all coding and documentation activities meet or exceed the established standards of quality and accuracy.  Serves as a key resource for coding matters, including internal and external training and oversight. In addition to reviewing, auditing, and coding medical records to ensure the appropriate diagnostic codes and modifiers according to Generally Accepted Medical Coding Guidelines, ICD-10 Guidelines, and CMS Correct Coding are used, this individual ensures the accuracy of submission activities and audit results. Ensures accuracy and productivity of other coders. Interfaces with and disseminates audit results to clinicians and provides guidance to practices and management on coding accuracy improvement.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Current/Active coder certification is required by AAPC, AHIMA, CPC

Experience

  • Minimum 4-6 years’ of coding experience required with emphasis on ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS coding, medical terminology and regulatory requirements; and
  • 2 years Coding Training experience/2 years of medical chart auditing experience; and
  • Prior work experience in the healthcare field specifically related to coding and/or medical billing and compliance

Preferred

  • 5 years Medical Billing experience
  • Experience with at least one EMR and chart abstraction
  • Current Certified Risk Adjustment Certification (CRC) and Certified Professional Coder (CPC).

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of ICD-10, HCPCS and CPT coding guidelines, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
  • Demonstrate analytical and problem-solving ability regarding barriers to receiving and validating accurate ACE information
  • Computer literate with medical software
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of CMS coding guidelines, including understanding of Risk Adjustment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in the English language
  • Must be able to work independently to carry out work efforts

Licenses/Certifications

  • Medical Coding Certificate CPC Credential/Certification by AHIMA or AAPC
  • Ability and means to travel on a flexible schedule as needed to our Primary Care Practices, proof of auto liability and auto property damage insurance on vehicle used is required.
